What to look for when choosing an Accountant

What should you look for when choosing an accountant?

Legally anyone can call themselves an Accountant.  They can be someone with no qualifications and training right across to a friend in the pub!  They do not have to have passed exams or undertake regular reviews to make sure they can deal with what you require.

By appointing a qualified Chartered Accountant you will have confidence that they are fully trained, are constantly assessed by their Accountancy body for quality and to ensure they are up to date.  Also if anything goes wrong there is someone to complain to!

All qualified accountants registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) must have professional indemnity insurance which means if the worst happens and you receive incorrect advice there is someone to take the matter to.

So what else is important?

It is important to make sure you can talk to your Accountant and they can talk to you in plain English.  If you don’t get on with them then you may not feel comfortable talking to them about important issues.

It helps if your Accountant understands your business and what you want to achieve from it.  Do you want to build it up and sell it on later or are you happy to earn an income from it and then close it down when you’re ready to retire? Either way has differing consequences and it is important to discuss this.
